LAS VEGAS – The UFC lightweight title picture is a little murky, and Justin Gaethje is hoping to make it a little clearer this weekend.
Fighting in the co-main event of UFC 313 this Saturday, Gaethje (25-5 MMA, 8-5 UFC) is looking to insert himself back into the title conversation with a big statement win over Rafael Fiziev. Gaethje is unsure of his chances of getting a title shot, keeping in mind he’s coming off a bad KO loss to Max Holloway last year at UFC 300, but he thinks he at least gets back in contention with a solid showing.
“As an athlete competing here, I have to think that,” Gathje told reporters when asked about potentially getting a title shot. “I hope for that, but I have no idea. I have to go in there, and I have to win; that’s first and foremost. I’m always exciting, the most consistent guy that’s stepped in there. I think the way that I win and how my fights usually go, I think I’ll definitely be in consideration for it.”
Gaethje was originally scheduled to compete against Dan Hooker this Saturday. However, an injury suffered by the New Zealander, prompted Fiziev (12-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) to step in as a short-notice replacement.
“The Highlight” never thought about pulling out himself. He was willing to fight anyone on short notice – which signals him that he’s very much still in the game.
“I think if I started worrying about the risk, then I would just retire,” Gaethje said. “This is a very risky sport. I love the intensity that it brings, and I’m yearning to get back in there and feel that.”
