Joe Rogan explains why UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones is the greatest fighter of all time.
Outside of a 2009 disqualification loss to Matt Hamill in a fight he was dominating, Jones (28-1 MMA, 22-1 UFC) never has lost an MMA fight. A former longtime UFC light heavyweight champ, Jones was able to capture a second belt when he returned from a more than three-year layoff to quickly submit Ciryl Gane at UFC 285. He then defended his belt with a dominant finish of Stipe Miocic last November at UFC 309.
Rogan marveled at Jones’ longevity on top.
“He has been a world champion for 14 years,” Rogan said on a recent episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience.” “That is unheard of. I think on paper, for sure. The problem with that is who did he fight vs. who did Georges St-Pierre fight. Who did Khabib (Nurmagomedov) fight vs. who did Georges St-Pierre fight. Who did ‘Mighty Mouse’ (Demetrious Johnson) fight? Who did Anderson Silva fight?”
Jones, who has a complicated history of failing multiple drug tests during his career, took out generations of light heavyweight talent from “Shogun” Rua to Alexander Gustafsson to Daniel Cormier. Rogan acknowledges the great accomplishments of former UFC two-division champ Georges St-Pierre and the record holder for most consecutive title defenses, Demetrious Johnson, but ultimately believes Jones is the greatest of all time.
“Out of just the sheer longevity and the accomplishments, I say Jon Jones (is the greatest),” Rogan said. “But I could see the argument for ‘Mighty Mouse’ being the best martial artist I’ve ever seen. I think he’s the best expression of martial arts talent and technique that I’ve ever seen. But then Georges St-Pierre is right up there, too.
“And Georges St-Pierre was a multiple-division world champion. He won the welterweight title and then he came back after four years off and beat Michael Bisping for the middleweight title. He’s in the argument, too, but I just think there’s a real problem with saying ‘the No. 1 of all time, the greatest of all time.’ But if you were going to give it to somebody, I’d say give it to Jon.”
