PFL fighter Jay Jay Wilson was officially suspended Thursday by USADA after what appears to be a 10-month-long investigation into a cross-contaminated vape pen.
USADA announced Wilson was handed a three-month suspension retroactive to April 1, 2024. That means Wilson’s suspension has already been served by an extra six-and-a-half months, as he was not permitted to fight between the positive test and the announced sanction.
According to USADA, Wilson tested positive for metenolone and its metabolite in an out-of-competition drug test. Further inquiry with Wilson led to the discovery he smoked a vape pen shortly after someone else who had orally used metenolone.
Testing of corroborative evidence backed Wilson’s claim, though USADA said it took months of experts to confirm the scientific plausibility of such a sequence leading to a positive drug test.
USADA said Wilson was also suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC), but that the commissioning body also resolved the case. Wilson appeared on an NAC monthly meeting agenda in 2024 but the matter was continued and has not again been publicly discussed.
New Zealand’s Wilson, 27, has only competed under the Bellator banner as a professional. The promotion slowly built him prior to PFL’s acquisition of Bellator in late 2023. Wilson has yet to fight in the PFL era.
It’s unclear what his next move is, as the promotion has yet to announce its lightweight tournament roster.
